Today's New York Times has a review of a bio of this guy, whom I had never heard of, which compares the posthumous snitch controversy over him to the Dreyfus affair given the polarization over this issue that has arisen in Italian society. The reviewer's conclusion is that while he was an open cold-war liberal from the 50s on, he is unconvinced that the allegation that he was a fascist snitch during the 20s and 30s is true as he was in exile during that period. Rather, he suggests that the offending letters had to do with intervening with the authorities on behalf of his brother?
