Dear Marxmail List Members,

Please see www.SocialistWorker.org to get a sense of the movement
against cuts in education in California.

I would suggest that the person (sartesian) who says the ISO opposes
occupations is either badly misinformed,
or is, as he/she says of themselves in their own post, a sectarian
whose dislike of ISO comrades
is blinding him/her to the facts.

So, for the record, the ISO does not oppose occupations. Our members
have helped plan some of them and
participated in many of them at multiple schools, in addition to the
direct actions at UCLA when the regents
voted to impose the 32% fee hike. Where we have not participated in
the occupations, we have helped organize
outside support and physical defense of the occupations. Of course,
we are a small group in a big state so we make
no claim on being involved in every action up and down California.

I won't speak on behalf of the other groups referenced in Sartesian's
"personal sectarian scorecard" other than to say
they have all been involved in building the movement since before it
was a movement. Whatever other disagreements
I have with those comrades, the idea that the socialist left is
somehow acting as a "brake" on the movement
is foolish. In fact, one of the most exciting things about the
movement's development is that there is beginning to be a
serious discussion between (very broadly speaking) the socialist and
anarchist pre-existing left.

We want more occupations. We want them bigger. We want them
coordinated. We want them to draw in
ever greater numbers of students, faculty and staff. Of course, that
doesn't mean that activists shouldn't
use their judgement about whether a specific direct action makes sense
at any given time.

Finally, pardon my ignorance, but who are you
"[email protected]" ???? I'd be happy to talk in person with
you to help you get your facts straight so you can contribute to
building unity on the left in place of casting dispersion
on many of the leading activists in the movement. Of course, tactical
disagreements are natural, but they should be based
on a correct account of the facts. Feel free to reply to me on this
list, or in person at
[email protected].

Comradely,
Todd Chretien
Bay Area ISO
