I am getting the feeling that
we may be seeing a repeat of
1994 this November. The election
of Obama in 2008, like most victories
for the Democrats at the national
level was achieved on the promise
that a Democratic victory would
bring significant social change.
As those promises have proven hollow
(in Obama's case, just look at the
Iraq and Afghanistan wars, his proposals
for health care etc.) The result is
that in later elections, turnout from
from more progressive voters becomes
depressed. Meanwhile, turnout from
conservative voters increases, as
they become mobilized to defeat the
"socialistic" Democrats. Hence, victories
for the GOP.

How many times have we seen this pattern
repeated?

Meanwhile in Massachusetts, the GOP candidate,
Scott Brown, has managed to make quite
a fight of it for Ted Kennedy's former seat,
and if the most recent polls are to be
believed, he may well win the thing.
Even if he doesn't this will inevitably
put the fear of God into the DP.

Labor backs down, agrees to healthcare deal
A big win for the White House: Unions will support healthcare
reform, even with a tax on expensive insurance plans
