I'm not sure why anyone thinks the left is 'obsessed' with the shooting any more than they should be, I certainly didn't get that sense from Lenin's Tomb. The right has - more or less - been saying that 'those' people should be killed, and I for one am surprised that it didn't happen earlier. Let's not forget that Glenn Beck named on-air the ISO, Solidarity, and a number of other groups that many of us are affiliated with during his rant against the One Nation march. That said, what should our response be? Certainly, to blame the Tea Party and the GOP for the obvious reasons, but also to point out that the Democrats - and particularly Obama - have not failed to challenge them in any meaningful way because of their very clear subservience to capital and disinterest in mobilizing their base. I don't think the key question is whether we should be in a defensive or offensive posture, but where we have the ability to fight back and how we can build alliances and mobilize those who are angry, scared, unorganized, and fed up with the Democrats. Louis is correct in the sense that the battles that need to be fought are around the legalized racist attacks in Arizona but also against the collaborative attack on the working-class across the country whether it's the attack on teachers, right-to-work laws, or Islamophobia. We can't fight every random nutjob, but we must recognize and challenge the environment and forces that embolden them. ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: [email protected] Set your options at: http://lists.econ.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
