Occupation Of Saint Paul’s Cathedral

April 12, 2001

Today at around 1600, the highest point of the dome of
St. Paul’s Cathedral was occupied for 2,5 hours by 5
members of the IKM (Committee For Struggle Against
Torture Through Isolation) in order to highlight the
ongoing Hunger Strike resistance of political
prisoners in Turkey.
The activists hanged two big banners on the rails,
throw leaflet down the dome and shout slogans during
their action.
They gave themselves in when the press arrived. The
police kept them there for a while and released them
without charge. Both BBC and ITV television reporters
had interviews with the spokesperson of the group. The
IKM stated that they would continue their peaceful
actions until problems in Turkey’s prisons solved. At
the moment more than 2000 political prisoners are on
Death Fast to protest the F-type isolation prisons. So
far 34 prisoners have lost their lives, 28 of them
were killed by shooting, burning and torture- 6 died
of Death Fast.

The following is the statement of IKM distributed
during the occupation.

THE RESISTANCE IN THE PRISONS OF TURKEY CONTINUES
TODAY IS THE 175TH DAY OF THE HUNGER STRIKE
April 12th 2001
Spring, 2000:
The state in Turkey started to build F-type prisons
(isolation cells)
October 20, 2000:
Almost 1000 political prisoners launched a Hunger
Strike.
November 19, 2001:
First group of political prisoners declared that they
were converting their hunger strike into a Death Fast.

December 19, 2001:
State security forces attacked the hunger strikers
with more than 20,000 bombs, 3,000 personnel,
bulldozers and helicopters. It took four days and 28
political prisoners were killed. 6 of them were women
and they were burnt alive in Bayrampasa prison /
Istanbul. They were burnt, shot, mutilated and
survivors were taken to newly built F-type prisons.
The prisoners were tortured and raped during the
transfers and on arrival. They were locked in cells of
1 to 3 persons.
The other political prisoners then joined the hunger
strikers. The total number has now reached 2,000.
When the prisoners lost their consciences, they were
taken to hospitals for force feeding and involuntary
medical intervention. Semra Askeri, Hatice Yazgan,
Eylem Yesilbas, Baris Kaya, Ayse Bastimur and Serkan
Aydogan have lost their memories as a result of
forcible intervention. THEY ARE AT LEAST THE LIVING
DEAD. We are confronted with tens, hundreds of new
deaths, with new and irreversible damage. There is
only one way to prevent this: to fulfil the humane and
democratic demands of the prisoners, who went on the
Death Fast.
The Main Demands Of The Political Prisoners Are:
1 – The “F” Type prisons must be closed.
2 – The anti-terror law (Article 3713) must be
abolished, along with all its consequences.
3 – The protocol signed by the Justice, Interior and
Health Ministries and known as the “tripartite
protocol” must be abolished.
4 – The State Security Courts must be abolished, along
with all the provisions for which they are
responsible.

THE DEATH FAST CONTINUES WITH NEW MARTYRS:
March 21, 2001: Cengiz Soydas 150th day of Death Fast
April 7, 2001: Adil Kaplan 171st day of Death Fast
April 8, 2001: Bulent Coban 160th day of Death Fast
April 9, 2001: Gulsuman Donmez, she was a TAYAD member
and supported the resistance of the prisoners by
participating in Death Fast. She died on her 147th day
of Death Fast.
April 11, 2001: Fatma Ersoy, 171st day of Death Fast
April 11, 2001: Nergiz Gulmez, 114th day of Death
Fast.

Who will be the next?
