In the list that preceded this one, we had 3 rules:
1. Try to limit yourself to 5 posts a day.
2. Clip extraneous text.
3. Attachments not permitted (graphics, pdf's, etc.)
Les and I decided to eliminate #3 because it was originally intended to
prevent malware and because it originally reflected the slow bandwidth
of the time, with many people using modems, especially in the Third
World. Since bandwidth has improved dramatically over the years, that
shouldn't be a problem. As for malware, I have never seen an attempt to
distribute it on Marxmail 1.0 and am confident that few hackers would
try to take advantage of a Marxism list, whatever happened at U. of
Utah. I also feel relatively confident that groups.io includes security
software that would block it. For comrades who came out of Marxmail 1.0,
you'll be as glad as I am not to have to put up with the false positives
that the system at U. of Utah generated.
I've already mentioned rule number 1 that was intended to prevent flame
wars, which were far more prevalent up to 15 years ago. Marxmail
developed a culture eventually that amounted to herd immunity. People
looking for a food fight knew that we wouldn't put up with it when they
were seeking a civil and serious forum to discuss Marxist theory and
political action.
Finally, we used to attach a prefix to each message about "clipping
extraneous text". I haven't mentioned this before but I want to keep
this rule alive even though I don't plan to be rigid about it. In the
early days of Marxmail, you used to get threads in which every earlier
message was included. This was a problem for comrades with slow
connections since it meant processing a ton of text that was not of
immediate relevance, plus it looked crappy.
So, in conclusion, when you are replying to a previous post, only
include the text that is directly relevant to your reply. This is
especially true when you are posting a one or two sentence reply.
