It is not so much Allende winning that sticks in my mind and in my craw. It is his overthrowal and murder.
I got out of jail on Sept 12th, 1973 following my bust at UCLA for an anti-bombing (either Cambodia or Laos, I can't remember) protest. I did not pay the $50 fine and was arrested. The judge asked me why and I said "because it was too much in the first place." "$50 isn't too much for 'participation in a riot'", the judge said. I replied that "It wasn't a riot until the cops came." Gavel came down and sentence pronounced, "Thirty days". I almost said "You realize that you are sending me to jail cause I am poor" (being a student with a wife and child) but did not press my luck. My first daughter turned 1 on September 7th so I missed that. What I could not miss was the LA Times in a news vending machine at the bus stop with a glaring headline "Allende Overthrown" (paraphrase). My stomach literally dropped like I was on an elevator in a hundred floor free fall as the realization washed over in a wave that there was no peaceful electoral road to socialism as long as the imperial might of the United States government continues to exist.
