I can say from personal experience that the original Greens did have more than
their share of bourgeois hippies. Except for a handful of socialists like
Hawkins, those were the folks that got the Greens on the ballot in California
and elsewhere. Once they got the ballot line, most of the hippies didn't want
to run candidates. But for Nader and the socialists, they might never have.

As to the Greens never electing anyone to state office, they elected a
candidate to the California State legislature (Audie Bock, I believe was her
name). She defeated long time Dem Pol Elihu Harris in a special election in an
Alameda County District. Bock proved to be an embarrassment. I don't believe
she was even a registered Green when she left office, This was in the early
2000s or late 1990s.

The Greens also elected a couple of Greens to the San Francisco County Board of
Supervisors in the 2000s. One of them, Matt Gonzalez, ran a very strong raise
for Mayor. He reached the run off and was defeated by Gavin Newsom (I believe)
but ran a respectable race nonetheless. The San Francisco Supervisors and
Mayor's offices were officially non partisan but both Gonzalez and the other
individual - whose name escapes me were both open in their Green Party
membership.

None of these individuals were self identified socialists and their politics
were largely indistinguishable from the progressive wing of the local
Democratic Party but nonetheless the fact remains that in the late 1990s and
early 2000s the Green Party could and did win elections.
