I would add some historical perspective ---- One of my favorites is ERIC FONER's THE STORY OF AMERICAN FREEDOM --- It's story stops about 20 years ago but it's really good in describing how various movements in our history BUILT ON the basic founding (false at the time) "ideals" of the American Republic to advance the cause of liberty and justice for all ----
