Hello everyone: A group of friends and myself who identify as socialists/leftists are trying to start a political organization. So far we have had a couple of meetings to discuss our vision for what we want the group to be. In today's meeting we identified a few components including political education, formulating perspectives on national and international events, possibly base building (in the image of a group like the Marxist Center and possibly their most notable constituent organization, Philly Socialists) in order to gain working class members and run local campaigns. The goal is to build a working class party. I really see base building as it is performed by a group like Philly Socialists as a tactic to build the capacity of a working class organization and potentially win local campaigns and serve the needs of the working class on a local scale. It would seem to me based on reading their material that Philly Socialists views base building as some sort of panacea. To me, it's just a tactic and a limited one because it doesn't take into account that the organization also has to intervene in and seek to shape and direct larger upsurges in activity that come about in response to events such as the police murder of George Floyd. A small organization intervenes in that upsurge and organizes the participants in order to start to build a working class party of thousands and eventually more. I wanted to ask though about political education. What do you think are some important texts that we should be reading and discussing in order to educate ourselves and eventually others?.
