I thought this was a really interesting article. I recently joined this list knowing very little about Marxism...until just a few weeks ago, I conflated socialism with social democracy and I thought communism was a centrally-planned economy with no private property because everything is owned by the state. I think such misconceptions are common in the US, where we have little exposure to socialist and communist electoral parties, and I think the “socialism = social democracy” misunderstanding is partially responsible for DSA’s growing popularity. (I am not a member of DSA so this is purely conjecture, but if you consider the amount of time they spend talking about social welfare vs. uprooting the capitalist system altogether, I cannot be the only one who thought like that.)
So it is interesting for me to read things from DSA/the DSA left that suggest they really do aspire for something more than the Bernie Sanders brand of Socialism Lite™. For example, this Jacobin article: https://jacobinmag.com/2018/08/democratic-socialism-social-democracy-nordic-countries I guess it’s not surprising that any large organization would have a range of ideologies. But as I think Louis was pointing out, it’s hard to reconcile some of those avowed ideologies to DSA’s actual practices (working within the framework of the Democratic Party, DSA leadership’s complete capitulation to Biden before the election, etc.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
