Dear Hari,
I am aware that the issue of how COVID-19 "caused", "is related" with
death is a disputed issue. Some time ago I reported that the Austrian
government changed the official counting of COVID-19 death. As long as
they had to justify the lockdown every death who also had COVID-19 was
counted as "COVID-19 death" irrespective if the virus was the cause of
the death. Once they finished the lockdown (i.e. once they had to
justify this and hence were less interested in bigger figures), they
changed the system and only those were counted as "COVID-19 death" when
it was proven that they died because of the virus.
For all these reasons it is better to look primarely not for the
COVID-19 death figures but for the total mortality. This is why I
referred to the total mortality of Sweden.
True, Sweden has a good health system. But the figures of those sent to
hospitals are also not very high. (See the same Wikipedia entry I sent
before). And, by the way here are also low death figures in Uruguay
which also never had a lockdown.
Hari, allow me to ask you a question: in spring you wrote (I quote from
memory and if I misquote you I apologize in advance) that yes there are
problematic aspects with the Lockdown policy in terms of democratic
issues. But, you wrote (again if I remember correctly) that one has to
accept this as a lesser evil for some time because of the severity of
the pandemic. Now, we are eight month later. And the Lockdown offensive
starts again - at least in Europe and Biden will probably do the same
soon. How long is such Lockdown policy justified for you? Until the
pandemic is over? This might take years! Is this not a total turn around
of left-wing policy which always defended democratic rights?!
Louis hopes to discredit me by associating me with a right-wing
evangelic in the US (of whom I have never heard before and who must be a
very obscure figure but that doesn't matter for US-centred people). But,
Louis, we also solidarize with the Uyghurs and the Hong Kong protests
even if Trump (and the Evangelics) do the same verbally! And anyway, is
it really better to join the company of Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos?
Furthermore, many right-wing governments are fanatic supporters of the
lockdown policy. Just see Israel, India, Australia, etc.
