It's worth noting that the reported vote was exceptionally high. The
estimated U.S. population of 18 and over at this point (before we have
census results) runs to about 228 million. Participation in the election
is currently estimated at around 159.8 million, over 20 million more than
in the previous election. I don't have any state or regional background,
but it seems reasonable to guess that a higher proportion of young people
turned up and voted for Biden. The same in most places (but not all) in
terms of people of color.

I think the Trump total was also up, more than four years ago among those
who really don't follow politics or even pretend to follow politics or
science or much of anything that concerns us on this list. There are many
considerations motivating them. The one I hear a lot is that they
genuinely resent being required to study their own way through the
smokescreen put up over climate change or the ins-and-outs of Obamacare,
etc.

As in 2016, though, a lot of the breakdown was between cities and the
countryside. On one level, Biden's victory came with his successes in the
suburbs, but the more rural areas of the states remained Trumpy. This
poses serious questions over the long run . . . so, absolutely nothing that
bothers the Democratic leadership.

Btw, in his latest interview, Biden--whose earlier essentially nixed the
idea of having Warren or Sanders in the cabinet--was talking about wanting
Republicans who supported Trump (not the Lincoln Project types) on his
cabinet, reflecting his desire for national unity. So all you folks that
voted for him rather than Trump because you didn't want to waste your vote
will have the same voice in Biden's cabinet as those of you who didn't vote
for him. And your vote sanctioned continued power for the people who said
you wanted to be rid of . . . . So all you hard-nosed pragmatists should
give yourself a pat on the back.

Cheers,
Mark L.
