Language isn't only semantic and syntactic--a vehicle for conveying meanings. it also has a pragmatic dimension. Speech is action and its artifacts can be layered. Sometimes speaking can assume a guise of bland semanticity when in a deeper sense it is the equivalent of a beating in a dark alley. Hence the convenient "dog whistle" or the Nazi idea that "these Jews" are so obstinate--why won't they just sit down and calmly discuss the "Jewish question?"
Academic freedom can't and shouldn't prevent every kind of cancellation. Somewhere along the line there will be our freedom versus theirs and "we" (if there is a "we") have to fight for ours, just as we stand for our morality as versus theirs. "We" (whoever "we" are) have to struggle and win--put certain offspring of [ gender-free bad-animal insults ] in a cage for the rest of their lives or just shoot them if they won't stop fighting. When the University of Virginia Department of English gave Richard Spencer a raving mad level of undergraduate honors and got him into the University of Chicago, the assholes that did it no doubt thought that, amid the joyous wine, cheese, nookie, and/or the odd secret affiliation with Opus Dei, they were striking a blow against the Cancel Culture of the Left.
