I see a lot of parallels between the Arab Spring ,Occupy, Gillet Jaunes, and
,Black Lives Matter movements. As others have said here, too many on the left
want to paint each of these movements, as the beginning of the next big
communist revolution. In each case ,there is too big a class disparity among
different elements of these movements for this to happen. As such, socialists
in each of these countries were unable to build these movents into a true class
based ,anti-imperialist, anticapitalist revolution. We can argue back and forth
why all day ,until the climate catastrpohe wipes out all life on the planet
,but one thing is for certain, Russia 1917, China 1949, or Cuba 1959 is never
going to happen again. If we are at all serious ,we need to come up with
workable models for how a  21st Century model of socialism might come to pass.
We have yet to see the emergence of leaders, or dedicated movements, that can
begin such a movement in the world beyond Latin America ,where there is a proud
tradition of socialist parties ,trade unions ,etc

The Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional in Bolivia seems much more democratic
than many European parliaments ,let alone the US Congress ,so I can see where a
socialist, or communist party might be able to gain a foothold there.

I do not know too much about Anand Gopol,or the history of the left in Syria
,but I do know that because of the connections Gopol has with a number of US
NGOs , anybody on the left should view his opinions as being supect to say the
least. I had a lot of trouble getting any further in this article ,after Gopol
bilthely swept Nasser aside as a "dictator" . I am one of those who admire
Nasser for the efforts he made to lift Egyptian people out of poverty ,and
modernize his country ,in the post-colonial era. The truth about Nasser
,especially in regards to trade unions, is much more nuanced.

I would be more interested in knowing what the current political status of the
Syrian Communist Party  (Unified) is. What relationship do they have with the
Syrian government? Where do they unite ,or part, with Assad, beyond their views
on American imperialism ,and Syrian nationalism? How large a presence are they?
Is the party growing ,or are they being suppressed by the state ?
