I read it carefully ---- Having worked for 38 years in a pretty lily-white institution, and seen the problems that faculty of color face navigating the steps from hiring to tenure, I see this story as --- yes, very complicated --- but basically as an example of how DIFFICULT it is for an "outsider" to be truly welcomed in a rather homogeneous academic setting ---
There is no question that this new faculty member was not welcomed, not mentored, and left pretty much on her own --- one of the most important facts presented in this story is the FACT (and it is a fact) that students on evaluations routinely UNDER-evaluate faculty of color (and women faculty in general). THus, any evaluator utilizing the student evaluations has to look BEHIND the mere numbers to see if they can discern the BIASES that students bring to a classroom when a teacher of color is brought into a basically lily white school. I place the blame on this faculty member's "colleagues" --- I expect that the ultimate decision will be some kind of "buy out" --- she has no interest in teaching at that school and the school just wants the lawsuit to "go away" --- I hope she lands on her feet --- On Wed, Dec 9, 2020 at 7:59 AM Louis Proyect <[email protected]> wrote: > A Black professor at Calvin University says colleagues discriminated > against her in denying tenure.
