I hear your point there Michael. But the operative issue is that the following 50 years of scholarship by people who study the war has made it clear that the Spanish government was unable to get compliance and absolute obedience from the anarchists in the economy. It would be roughly equivalent to this ongoing argument about the no-strike agreement in this country during WWII. It sucks because of the very legitimate and very real issues in that debate, including those put up by people like A Phillip Randolph, but how long can a war economy afford to be at the bargaining table before you start running out of planes and ammunition, which in turn leads the enemy to retaking ground? Where I agree with Chomsky is that the Communist Party shot itself in the foot by throwing the anti colonial plank overboard in the name of the Popular Front, if the Republicans had granted Spanish Morocco national liberation that would have cut off Franco’s ground troop supply lines.
