Some time ago, I studied the early period of Christianity a bit and I
read the same that the Jerusalem branch of the Christians left the city
briefly before it was besieged (and finally destroyed) by the Roman
occupiers. So while the Jewish hereos of Jeruslam and later Masada
fougth heroically against the Empire, the early Christian group (in
Jerusalem, there were also others) betrayed the struggle.
On the other hand, this betrayal was instrumental in spreading the
Christians to other cities and countries (most importantly to Rome and
Anatolia) were they helped to spread the new religion. In this process
they were "pushed" by reality to "de-Jewish" Christianity in order to
better adapt it to the non-Jewish enviroment.

(Have no idea if this simple story has been revised by subsequent
writings but I find it interesting that this article, from 1971,
doesn't even mention Bar-Kochbar --- nor the "Christian"
disassociation from the Jewish revolt in 66-70 ...)
