One thing you can bet on: nobody, least of all Joe Biden, has the slightest intention of taking any action at all against Trump, Hawley, and the organizers of this attack. It will be a major struggle just to get the authorities to nominate some inconsequential scapegoat.
I hate to push the Hitler analogies because I agree with Louis Proyect's critique of Trump's alleged fascism; however one disturbing valid parallel may be with the Beer Hall Putsch, for which Hitler and his boys got a slap-on-the-wrist sentence in Landsberg Prison, with all the comforts of home, and came back waving Mein Kampf and (eventually) stronger than ever. The point of actual correspondence is that we are living in a failing Republic that is on its way out, and there is no way in which the powers that be can possibly summon either the courage or the perceived legitimacy to take the necessary steps. They won't dare even if they want to. Of course, when Cicero sent the Catilinarian conspirators to the public strangler without a trial, it barely delayed the final collapse of the Republic, so it may be there's no way to salvage bourgeois democracy anyway. But I fear it's certain that Biden and company will not seriously try, thus going the Weimar authorities one better. The election will be certified, and Hawley's inevitable big speech, we may hope, will not be televised. After that we will be expected to dust ourselves off and proceed as if nothing had happened. No prosecutions, no consequences for anyone of any real importance.
