Leftist gun clubs have been doing just this for years, Redneck Revolt/the John Brown Gun Club, the SRA, the Huey Newton Gun Club, have all understood the challenges ahead and modestly began preparing. Yes, the politics of these groups can be problematic in that they often are trying to mesh Anarchists, Marxists, Communists, and MLM folks together, but they have taught thousands of folks on the left how to safely use firearms for protection and organized working class folks of all colors in both rural communities and cities alike.
They also serve as a symbol of a left that is not hamstrung by demands for "peaceful protests" and not afraid to commit to the fight or to put their bodies on the line (See their actions in Charlottesville). Mind you these are not the folks who are not only "deplatforming" the alt-right in places like Berkeley and Portland, but living and working in rural communities where they face fascists in their community daily (such as local police forces who are often openly supportive of Proud Boys and 3 percenters.
