These are very old questions that predate the Internet. In the early 20s, shortly after the formation of the Communist Party, there was a huge debate about whether to operate underground or not. The Palmer Raids seemed to be reason enough to be underground but only at the expense of being able to recruit to the party. With Internet security, you face similar questions. In an ideal world, everybody on a Marxism list would be quite transparent about their identity. However, in the past we had to deal with subscribers who had finished college and entered the job market. They implored us to remove their posts from the archives, which was not an easy task especially since the archives were in multiple places and we couldn't even get our hands on the one at U. of Utah. I always chuckled at the idea that a potential employer would care about a qualified applicant being a Marxist. After all, our problem is being ignored, not being a threat to the state like the Russian Bolsheviks.
