I read the Bello piece -- I think he's too damn pessimistic. Eric Foner's book THE STORY OF AMERICAN FREEDOM shows that right from the beginning the "ideology" of the Declaration of Independence was SEIZED upon by all those who opposed the restrictions on freedom --- including white and black abolitionists.
He is so focused on whites being brainwashed by Lockean racism he seems to ignore that black people have something to say about this --- and that the tension between one self-described ideology of freedom and our constant suppression of black (and other peoples of color) actually "bothers" more than a few whites ...
