Bello says: Ideas count — sometimes, they are even stronger than material interests. This is the case with the legacy of 17th century philosopher John Locke in the United States, which is central to explaining why class solidarity is so weak while white racial solidarity is so strong.
* * * * * * * * While I agree with Bello that class solidarity is weak compared to white racial solidarity, I think it is incorrect to trace this to Locke’s ideas. If the ideas were the cause, then the degree of class solidarity and racial solidarity should remain unchanged throughout US history. I believe that racial solidarity has been stronger and weaker at various times precisely because class solidarity has varied from one era to another. And this depends on the level of struggle and ultimately on the leadership of the working class. * * * * * * A side bar. Bello was invited to Vancouver in 2006 to be part of the World Peace Forum and associated activities. Within the main anti-war coalition there was support for this. But then some of them got feedback from a Filipino group in Vancouver that was opposed to Bello. These were supporters of the CPP of Jose Maria Sison. And Bello was on a death list they had published In any case his visit went ahead even though some people picketed him. I think that group suffered a loss of credibility and some of the non-members who were sucked into this must now be a bit embarrassed. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
