TO FOLLOW UP --- everyone should read the HAIR RAISING story of Uyghur (and Kazahk) repression in Xingiang (sp?) in the April 12 New Yorker. It's entitled GHOST WALLS -- it follows the story of a Uyghur ex-pat who was living in Vancouver when her father died (her father and mother were then living in Kazakhstan). When she and her mother went back to Xingiang to settle her father's affairs she was detained and suffere through a year and three months of "re-education" because she had been to "so many" countries. (It seems the Chinese can track almost everybody every where) --- she had to sign all sorts of confessions and prove her total loyalty to China before she was permitted to rejoin her mother. It took her a year after being released to become mentally strong enough to write down her story and talk publicly --- (most Uyghur ex-pats are worried about what would happen to family members back home should they speak out publicly).
Chinese repression makes Orwell's 1984 seem PRIMITIVE --- I wonder if it will be able to contain such a giant population. One American capitalist once quipped, "I can hire half the working class to shoot the other half...." --- I don't know --- but we will surely find out in subsequent years as the Chinese repressive apparatus gets stronger and more complete ... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
