I do not know German, but it would help me to have an exact literal
(word-for-word) translation of the sentences Garrido and Matt focus on. Why?
Because the word "bestimmt" appears only once in the second sentence in German,
but there are two iterations of the English word which translates it
("determines") in the Matt-translated second sentence. I am a lawyer and a
historian as well as ignorant of German word meanings and prose patterns. I
need to know precisely what each word in the sentence says, translating it word
for word, before I can make a judgment about how to better state what I think
is meant. The German does not APPEAR to be written in the nice pleasant,
it-is-not-A-that-determines-B-but-B-that-determines-A neatly packaged kind of
prose into which it has been translated. Thanks, Wythe
