The "liberal" wishiwash on Murray was a wonderful "get out of jail free" card for closet reactionaries who could have the fashionable gloss of progressivism and eat their racist and classist cake too. As the fashion shifted to beady-eyed neoliberalism, it became possible to proclaim a Rainbow Reaganism, which asserts the right of all to compete in what the French call "the struggle for life" as long as nobody coddles the natural losers--a much more efficient way of looking at the matter. A stifled yelp, a muffled thud here and there, and voila--le monde va de lui-meme. One wonders why the heirs of anticommunist liberalism even bothered to go on tinkering with all that social justice crap when TINA is all you need
