I remember reading Bell's book (Faces ...) and taking it as a cautionary
tale --- since no one knows the future (for sure), the recognition that
racism is
part of the DNA of America (infecting black folks not just white folks ---
 with colorism,etc. as well as "national" differences --- Carribean
immigrants versus native born
African Americans) does not mean that the structures of US racism are
permanent --- I think this is where Adolph Reed beats Bell ...

But the more general idea goes back to Sartre and Camus --- even if you are
SURE you are going to lose, you fight ...

(or as Jimmie Stewart says in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington:   "The only
fights worth fighting are for lost causes ...."!!!)
