Adam Tooze reviews Isabella Weber’s book on market reform in China, attributing
China’s spectacular growth to the CPC's rejection of Western-prescribed “shock
therapy” in the 80’s. According to Weber, the CP’s cautious approach to
loosening price controls was mainly influenced by the party’s understanding of
the decisive link between China's rampant postwar hyperinflation and the 1949
Revolution which swept the Nationalists from power.
