David. I never conflated the two. The Soviets are still around today and still call themselves Russians. Putin himself is a Soviet agent in charge of Russia. He is seeking to build Russian influence and control and is attempting to build influence in Africa much in the way of the Soviets. And also like the Soviets, he represses political dissent. The USSR and the Russian Federation are not the same, but they share many of the same characteristics. Most of the things West was referring to began during the times of the Soviet Union and have continued under the Russian Federation. Ultimately, Russian governments have always been nationalistic, and they marginalized, jailed, and exiled many minorities within the USSR. Merely having a socialist system never attenuated Russian imperialistic impulses. They were there under the czars and the Stalinists and exist today under a fascist regime.
