I want to respond to VGs short comment. I agree 100%. IN Taiwan, that is the ONLY issue. No one there, according the charts provided, want "reunification". Even among KMT leadership and voters that negotiated the famous "One China Policy" in the 70s (they actually kept quiet and let the US and PRC do the talking). I thought the article was generally very good. So, my take aways are this: 1. No one supports the PRC perspective of unification by any means necessary.
2. Flowing from that, the Taiwanese ruling class is still getting rich from investments in China. What VG forgets is that the chart really reflects China as a "capital market" and doesn't really show the impact of previous Taiwanese investments in manufacturing, ALL of which is still there to my knowledge or sold to PRC entities at a great profit for the Republic of China. 3. The actual vote reflects not the sentiment for "independence" but for not wanting war or, more honestly, appeasing the PRC/CCP leadership with their opposition to "Independence", something the ROC already exists under minus the actual Declaration of Independence the ruling party "stands for". NO ONE WANTS WAR except for a small minority of Taiwanese in the ruling party. That party wants to push as far as it can on the PRC's positions regarding One China and it is stupidly dangerous for all involved.
