The authorities--and the media--claim that they don't know anything about the motives behind the self-immolation outside the start of Trump's trial. They're just saying that the fellow probably had some personal issues. (Ya think?)
He was hoping to draw attention to something he saw as important enough to die. Witnesses reported that he had flyers and/or pamphlets. I doubt they were blank. Or that the security people and police and reporters who were around couldn't read. The most benevolent interpretation is that the authorities and the media don't want to give it that attention because they don't want to convey the idea that you can draw attention to a subject by setting yourself on fire. But they don't have enough respect for the public to just say that. But they also don't want to point out the most obvious explanation of the incident--the most obvious, though we cannot be certain of it. The time and circumstance suggest the persistent and cynical lies of the defendant in the courtroom (and the media's gleeful persistent platforming of those lies on a more-than-hourly basis) about the imminent demise of the republic because of his prosecution took their toll on one of the most vulnerable.
