In exchanging views with people who defend those tactics, I asked when in US
history has this type of a movement succeeded, and the reply seemed deeply
ignorant of history, or at least "ignorant" by the standards of this list.
When I first saw the anarcho-cosplay tactics of the anti-globalization movement
at the turn of this century, I thought that the strategy and tactics of that
movement betrayed a kind of mis-leadership that comes with the disappearance of
an established US left. I had been out of it myself. There was a dearth of
organizations and people capable of teaching the lessons of the past 150+ years
of struggle to the next generation. Instead, the next generation invented
their own. The tactics of physically confronting the police rather than
politically confronting the government and ruling class has taken hold in a
succession of US movements this century. These mostly have accomplished
nothing or worse. What the attacks on a library and the police have
accomplished in Portland, Oregon, so far, is to intimidate some people from
attending protests, particularly elders and parents with kids, etc. If it
undermines the protest at the cost of a trashed university library and 17
incinerated police cars. The other side might see that as a bargain.
Unfortunately, the other side has paid thinkers, writers, think tanks, and
other institutions to teach the lessons of the past to the guardians of
capital. They do not invent new counter-revolutionary strategies with each new
generation but keep getting better at it.
