Sounds like it might have been another case of the social sciences borrowing 
from the natural sciences, in this case from Steven Jay Gould's theory of 
punctuated equilibria in evolutionary biology.  Is the parallel apt? Any 
evidence that Gould's theory influenced the social structure of accumulation 
school?
