Dr. Weizfeld is entitled to his opinion but he is far from being the arbiter of
all things Jewish. Judaism is a religion. It is the ONLY thing ties all those
who describe themselves as "Jewish" together. There is IMO, no "Jewish People"
as Mark B. noted above. Jewish-Americans are very simply "Americans" (in the
vernacular we use in the U.S.). And in this sense no different than any other
"American" including regional identification ("New York Jewish", etc). I have
absolutely nothing in common, to site a real world example using myself with my
Israeli cousins (around 20 of them). THEY are Israeli in every sense possible,
I am not. I have a cousin in the UK also, they are totally "English". Meeting
Moroccan Jews (who are Trotskyists in fact) in France only confirmed how
meaningless the term "Jewish" means in any national sense whatsoever.
I'd argue two things. 1. "Israelis" are a nationality...or one is development
grouped around their common identity in language (Modern Hebrew) and, their
united in oppression of the indigenous Arab masses. 2. At one point in the
past, the 18th Century through the Holocaust, Yiddish speaking Jews were a
nationality in the most important ways (as against the entire RSDWP of Martov
through Lenin beliefs) but it wouldn't of included, say, Hungarian Jews who in
their majority, spoke German, or German Jews for the same reason. But no
longer. That "People" no longer exist as a homogeneous regional nationality.
