I see the revolutionary core of it as the direct action activists engaged in undermining the security of slavery by aiding runaways. This started small, among mostly free blacks but it esclated to the point where you had groups like John Brown's, raiding into Missouri.
There are analogies to later strike movements where enough people defied the authorities to show that its possible. The trick of the ruling class is to keep the people believing that such a resistance isn't possible. Our task is to get the people to realize that it not only is possible, but that it forces a renegotiation as to the boundaries imposed on them. By the end, a lot of the time, the authorities north if the Mason Dixon just gave up trying to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. At times, they would deputize citizens to go out and free slaves from Federal officers before they could get back to the South. When people are actively taking power, it's going to open electoral possibilities. Food for thought. Imagine the possibilities if applied in environmental politics. Then, we see what a deplorable course the Greens charted for themselves.
