advocates instead "to ally with their army of supporters against the far right
and in the process, as in their unions, try to win their confidence, raise
their level of political consciousness, and wean them away from their current
loyalties."
What are the "mass left-centre parties" in the U.S.? The two parties have few
ties with the masses. Just compare them today with the old city machines that
reached into the different neighborhoods ("wards"). The deepest they go now is
a layer of perhaps hundreds of thousands, maybe even a million, who try to make
a career of the politics of soliciting the well-to-do for donations, running
publicity operations, and crafting policy documents.
Criticizing and exposing these two organizations – Marv's "furiously attacking"
– cannot irritate the masses, because the masses have at best shallow
preferences for one or the other, not intimate ties and interests.
On the flip side of Marv's tin coin, nothing is left of any substance in advice
"to ally with their army of supporters." Your odds of making real radicals out
of the careerists and professional pwogwessives are very low, no matter how
much weaning you try to do.
Agitating, educating, and organizing for the socialist-communist path is not
easy. Still, the time to build a communist core is before the revolutionary
situation, not during it.
