I agree, John, that racism and sexism, in particular, played a large role in
the Democratic Party defeat. Some people say that Trump did not win, but the
Democrats lost. We'll be pulling apart "exit polls" and election data for
months to come. One TV station interviewed a woman in a hijab leaving a
polling place in Michigan. She told the reporter that she voted for Trump
because he said he would immediately end the war in Gaza. The people of
Missouri voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution in this
election, and they voted for Trump, over Harris by 18 percentage points; they
also returned Josh Hawley to the US Senate; he advocates abortion and
_contraceptive_ bans. Hawley won over an abortion-rights democrat by 13
percentage points. In 2016, anti-union Hawley beat a centrist Democrat who
supported union rights in the same election where the Missouri electorate
overturned a recently-enacted anti-union "Right to Work" law.
The national mood has swung from progressive reforms to reaction to the
progressive reforms of the 2010s, notably the efforts to end the carceral state
in the US where more people are in prison than anyplace else and is fifth in
per-capita incarceration, reportedly behind El Salvador, Rwanda, Turkmenistan,
and Cuba. The Black Live Matter tactic of simply calling to defund the police
was a bust. Police can let crime happen, and they did from Baltimore, Maryland
to Portland, Oregon, where I live. Oregon and nationally, the Democrats
mismanaged homelessness, drug addiction, and immigration along with Gaza and
Ukraine. Too much foreign war, too much domestic chaos, and plenty of fodder
for culture war attacks on trans people, houseless and immigrants.
