Reflections on Lenin by Lyndon Bouah April 3, 2020

"In 1908, Lenin at the invitation of Maxim Gorky visited Capris in Italy
where Gorky was staying. Gorky invited Bogdanov also. The three men had
plenty to talk about and also found time for some chess. Gorky recalled,
"Lenin played chess with Bogdanov, who once managed to beat him." Lenin
took the loss badly and was in a foul mood afterwards. But this is the only
record of Lenin being a bad loser in chess. On this occasion it might have
been more about the opponent against whom he lost."
//////////

On line are photos of Lenin and Bogdanov playing chess together on the
Isle of Capris.
The caption of one says, "Maxim Gorky watching Lenin get peeved and
depressed". The other isn't captioned but in it Lenin appears to be
shouting "MAT!" checkmate in Russian. But this, of course, is just
speculation;)
