It's a little bit one sided to talk about "recognition of their fundamentally
common interests" while at the same time dismissing their fundamentally
antagonistic interests that a) dominate the US political scene from 1820
through 1865, led to a civil war, breakup of the union, more deaths than any
other  period of combat, and destruction of one of the party's fundamental
interests--its property mode,

Yes the bankers in NY, the retail and merchant bankers, the textile factory
owners in Manchester, the shipowners transporting the cotton were capitalist.
They accumulated either by the exploitation of wage labor, or by claiming part
of the surplus value r ealized in marketing the output of  product produced  or
transported by free laborers (that doesn't mean the banks didn't lend,
appropriate. trade in slave products.  Bankers are a special lot and deserve a
special place in hell).  That the original material was produced by slaves
doesn't make the owner of slaves a capitalist. or slavery a capitalism.
Enmeshed? Yes  Critical to? Yes. But fundamentally the same?  No, if that were
the case I can't imagine why they went to war.  Competition?

I know ML has written a lot about this.  I've read it.  And disagree.  We
define capitalism by the mode of its organization of labor.
