Merchant capitalists did business with slaveholders, indigenous clans and tribes, feudal lords, royal houses; none of that makes the slaveholder, the feudal lord, the royal households capitalist, the indigenous tribes capitalists. Capitalism as Marx critiqued it emerges as a mode of production by imposing a specific condition of labor--that being labor power existing as a commodity where it is exchanged for values equivalent to the necessary time for its reproduction.
