1.Last night, South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol made a televised address imposing martial law. “/To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea’s communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements plundering people’s freedom and happiness, I hereby declare emergency martial law./” It was, of course, pure phantasy to claim that “/North Korea’s communist forces/” would pose any serious threat. The real reason was rather that the right-wing conservative President is extremely unpopular (his approval rating has dropped to 19%) and faces a parliament in which the liberal opposition Democratic Party holds the majority of seats. By imposing martial law and suppressing democratic rights, Yoon hoped to strengthen his position.
