DDM – This Syria outcome was entirely predictable, if one does not subscribe to the Campism of what is labeled ‘The Axis of Resistance’.
What it was is a Popular Front, as described by Bronstein/Trotsky. The point is, the differentiation to be made between Campism and Class Struggle. The former projects an alliance with the National Bourgeoisie as an all-class national struggle for independence, as in the anti-Colonial revolt. However, as has been stated previously, neo-colonialism nonetheless succeeds in controlling the former colonies by economic domination under capitalist rule. This was already analysed for the Chinese Revolution of 1936, where the Popular Front with the KMT failed to oust the Japanese occupation and merely resulted in the massacre of the Communists. Here we are facing a revolutionary process to which the Left has made no contribution and consequently has no voice and poses no alternative. Neither the regime’s military forces nor its imperial sponsor, Russia, and its regional backer, Iran, were able to defend it. Cities under the regime’s control have been freed, thousands of political prisoners liberated from its notorious dungeons, and space opened for a new fight for a free, inclusive, and democratic Syria for the first time in decades. At the same time, most Syrians know that such a struggle faces enormous challenges, beginning with the two key rebel forces, Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA). While they spearheaded the military victory, they are authoritarian and have a history of religious and ethnic sectarianism. Some on the Left have claimed without foundation that their rebellion was orchestrated by the U.S. and Israel. Others have uncritically romanticized these rebel forces as rekindling the original popular revolution that nearly overthrew Assad’s regime in 2011.
