Thanks for clarifying your position on the YPG, Michael, which is more nuanced
and reasonable than I mistakenly supposed. While I agree the Rojava Kurds
shouldn’t be immune to criticism, they are  secular and democratic and identify
with the international left in contrast to the Islamist groups which are
opposed to them ideologically and the Turkish-sponsored SNA which seeks to
crush them militarily, which is why they foremost deserve our support.

IMO the maneuvering of Erdogan and the SNA represents the greatest obstacle to
the unity of the victorious rebel forces which both the SDF and HST seem to be
working towards. As for relations with Israel, I think there is unanimity among
all the factions that it needs to be appeased in order to permit the
reconstruction of Syria. There may therefore be some truth to the reported
professions of friendship to the Israeli media by both lower level SDF and HST
sources presumably aimed at influencing Israeli public opinion and reassuring
Western governments expecting such signalling.

The Palestinian cause would be further sacrificed to that end, and the
possibility that the US will now allow Israel to attack Iran following the
defeat of the Islamic republic’s  junior partners in Syria and Lebanon is also
something which can’t be easily dismissed.
