So, trying to understand what the fundamental 'gulp' or foundation of the 'path 
dependency' was.

On the first 'candidate' - I guess one would have to read the book to get the 
'drift'. But it seems that you are not referring to the famous 'Preface' 
outlining some key notions of historical materialism. Where is the book 
marketed from?

On the second candidate - " Marx's initial ambivalence and subsequent 
enthusiasm for the Paris Commune, after it had been defeated. Should Marx have 
engaged earlier? Should he have tempered his post-debacle fervor? I have no 
idea. But the fallout contributed to the demise of the International. "

I will have to carefully review dates etc.
But my 'off-the-top-of-head' recollection was that Bakunin had rather fouled 
the nest, and M & E had basically had enough. And on top of that Florence K-W 
(Forget her exact name) had done some rather intolerable and besmirching things 
with the name of the First international. Is that not correct then?

Anyway, your book sounds intriguing.
