Hello Marv: I understand your concern about any sense that there is an 'inevitability' about world events. Probably, unlike many here, I do believe in the general pathways as described by the rubric of historical materialism. For me, that does not mean an exact prescription of events. Nor anything that denies human agency.
I mean I believe that Engels' later clarifications were quite accurate. Namely, although in only (as far as I am aware anyway) letter form - to Borgius and Conrad Schmidt etc - that history is a rough 'parallelogram' of forces - or some such formulation. As such that there are several possible off-beam things that may happen I think. Although we are not aware of any such seismic events in the offing, possibly even somewhere - the conditions for a toilers/workers revolution will come together. In any such case, it would force a lot of things to be re-considered. Or for example, in an opposite direction, not many left forces had projected that Trump would virtually overnight rescind the NATO-EU alliance. Was it Marx or Yoggi Berra who said: "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future.” Whoever. It is true. H PS: I do not mistake you for a pacifist. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
