Charles, it is pretty common knowledge. Back in the 70s, as my family was heavily involved in CP-ish activities around civil rights and the Vietnam War I talk with quite a few CPers about this. So it is word-of-mouth but never contradicted. I had even discussed this with Ann Braden of SCEF during a fund raiser at our house as SCEF itself was red-baited rather consistently.
