Stop MAGA Tyranny: Build a National ICE Out Coalition

Minneapolis has electrified the movement resisting Trump’s armed forces on US
streets. Labor unions; community, church groups, and student groups; political
organizations; and others successfully organized a citywide civic shutdown in
the depth of subfreezing winter weather.

To build on this, we need to strengthen and spread the movement nationally by
creating democratically organized national coalition of unions, ICE watch
organizations, immigrant rights groups and all those opposed to Trump’s
murderous and oppressive plans and actions.

Like the Civil Rights Movement, today’s activists use non-violent civil
disobedience which help derail the efforts of police and provocateurs to
justify use of the Insurrection Act. Nevertheless, these tactics did not
prevent armed ICE and Border patrol agents from murdering Renee Goode and Alex
Pretti in Minneapolis.

The reaction of Minneapolis took the next step by going from civil disobedience
and resistance to mass action that shut down the whole city. The people of
Minneapolis have provided us with a model to follow wherever and whenever
Trump’s goons try to take over a city or state.

We urgently need to form a unified national resistance organization with a
strategy to build on the example of the mass civic strike in Minneapolis. We
can learn from the history of the Civil Rights Movement and the Labor Movement.

The racist anti-immigrant offensive of Trump and his minions’ clearly aim to
undermine the mid-term elections and endanger the hard-won right to vote.
Nevertheless, the Democratic Party governments of Minnesota and Minneapolis
failed to stop ICE’s invasion, showing that defense of basic rights requires
more than mobilizing maximum voter turnout in November.

We simply cannot elect our way out of Trump’s march to tyranny. We need to
build the broadest local coalitions, linked together in a national
organization, around ICE OUT!, and look ahead to November to demand Defend the
Right to Vote! Underlying both is the demand of “No military and no militarized
police on US streets.”

The organization needed must be democratic, led by working people and should
include all sectors of the population opposed to Trump’s attacks on basic
rights. It should support and encourage troops to use their constitutional
rights to petition Congress to protest Trump’s misuse of the military.
