Only a general comment on this issue; I have yet to read this series John posted the links for here. Kurdistan spans at least 4 countries: Iran, Turkey, Iraq, & Syria. Their written language encompasses at least two distinct scripts (Latin character set used in Syria and Turkey and Arab character sets used in Iran and Iraq, there is also a Cyrillic script used in parts of the former USSR where Kurds resided.
They are divided politically with multiple fractions in all these countries. A sort of counter-factual observation: The failure of French and British colonialism/Imperialism after WWI to create an Imperialist client state of Kurdistan was on the biggest strategic errors of the 20th Century by Imperialism. The Sykes–Picot Agreement in 1916 was the start of the divvying up of the Middle-East by France and Britain. It was basically concluded by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 with what we see today. The goal by Imperialism, most notably British Imperialism, was the dividing of the Arab nation in old Mesopotamia region and by treaty, creating a non-expansionist Turkey. Had the British, especially, created a full "Greater Kurdistan" it would had a sympathetic non-Arab state located smack in the middle of the Arab countries. The whole sordid mess that is Zionism would not of reared its head, at least not as strongly, especially if the result of this was the crushing of the Balfour Declaration "dream" of T. Herzel (and others). I'm NOT advocating this but pointing out some of the proposals that crossed, especially, Sykes desk during this period.
