I also thought Bartov’s references to Stalin were somewhat gratuitous but his whole essay is clearly not anti-communist or anti-Soviet but the opposite: an effort to rehabilitate the role of Communism and the USSR in WWII and to show the close connection to it of East European Jewry. Bartov's largely positive review of Hellbeck's book punctures the politically-biased Western view that antisemitism alone explains the Holocaust, writing out of history the disproportionate role of Jews on the socialist and communist left which turned the long historical hatred of that small non-Christian minority community into a mass genocide perpetrated by the far right. Bartov is one of the few principled liberal Israelis who have drawn the parallel with the Gaza genocide, itself an outgrowth of the frenzied ethnonationalism which has come to dominate Israeli society.
