I’ve met many comrades who once belonged to the RCP, CPC-ML, WCP, CLM and other Canadian “anti-revisionist" ML’ist tendencies. We discovered we had more in common than we could possibly have imagined during the vicious sectarian confrontations when we were younger and the Trotsky-Stalin controversies seemed so much more relevant in the context of the national liberation wars of that period supported by Mao’s China and the Soviet Union. The closest friends of my wife and I when we lived in Ottawa were both trade unionists in the RCP. Our closest friend on Vancouver Island was an activist in CPC-ML together with her late husband, a trade union organizer in the logging industry. His experience, like that of other ML’ist trade unionists I've encountered differed little from my own. Though our approaches to trade union work may have differed, we all faced the same pressures in a labour movement strongly dominated by social democrats which was indiscriminately hostile to Trotskyists, Maoists, CP’ers and other tendencies to their left. A really good gauge of how the old sectarian barriers have broken down is the comradely relationship established with present and former Trotskyists by another admirer of Stalin on this list who is very much respected for his thoughtful approach to the issues.
